Another round with thunderstorms in the forecast. The rain made the track unpredictable and tested the driver’s courage and reactions. We have witnessed many pristine cars make mistakes on the bank and crash badly. To make it more interesting, the track was recently re-paved making the surface extremely slippery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6970″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]The decreasing radius bank entry means you have to find a balance of speed and angle and avoid the “wall”. As Alec practiced, he was slowly gaining confidence, he knows all to well from previous year’s crash that one mistake can end the day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6971″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]With 3 rounds under our belt, we were getting the new S15 chassis dialed in more with each event. Even though the S15 chassis is very similar to the previous year’s S14, the weight balance and overall dynamics of the chassis has changed significantly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6972″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]There was some confusion to understanding what the judges wanted to see in the qualifying runs, as the spotters from different teams seemed to have mixed feelings on the qualifying scores. Forrest was able to put a solid lead run but Dean’s correction made Forrest get off of his line and made contact with Dean. S15 is powered by a Sprint car V8 making over 800hp. Kenji Yamanaka also have never driven the car prior to the event but showed his experience by running consistent in practice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6892″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]The new track layout made for a very unforgiving transition from the bank to the mid section and the crossover lane had a big jump in the middle, putting the suspension to work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6896″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]As the day progressed Forrest was having some mechanical issues with the car and struggled to find his usual form. On his 2nd qualifying run, the intercooler endtank separated and the headgasket failed. The team worked hard through the night to get everything fixed for the competition day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6897″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Alec’s car was running consistent and looked very comfortable at his home track. Dai’s consistency and smooth driving makes him a very dangerous at any track. Alec was able to get more speed and angle through the bank and into the mid transition, forcing Dai to straighten out on the follow. This made for a very slick and dangerous track. At this point of the competition, due to time constraints, drivers were not allowed a “feeler” lap. Track was still wet with dry bank, it made it very difficult for everyone to find good rhythm. Ken on the lead run was much slower than expected causing Alec to spin on the transition. First day of practice was in the 90’s with humid conditions. Forrest’s high boosted 2JZ setup was dealing with extremely high intake temps.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6392″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Team quickly worked to relocate the oil cooler to prevent the intercooler from getting heat soaked and it seemed to help. Once the team got the IAT under control, Forrest was back driving in his new S15[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6393″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]2nd time in the new chassis, Forrest was still feeling the car out. We quickly adjusted the 3way adjustable shocks to get the most grip out in the slow corkscrew section.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6394″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Back corkscrew section was very tricky, as the judges wanted the drivers to hit an outside clipping point, which made an awkward line forcing some of the drivers to make mistakes. Marc’s S14 is also 2JZ powered and was showing good form in the practice. The hype was real! Crazy fast car and an amazing driver, we knew it was going to be a tough battle. First battle was close and judges called for One more time! He was also having some mechanical issues but seemed to be driving better than ever! Odi and Forrest have very different style of entry and driving so it made it exciting to see 2 contrasting styles battle it out. Forrest got too close on his follow and made a big correction on the entry and gave Odi the advantage. Downhill start means entry speeds upto 100mph into a high speed left sweeper into a slow uphill corkscrew. Elevation change and high speed entry equals for tricky timing and variety of styles into the first turn. Many drivers including Alec were testing the limits on the practice day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6338″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Alec Hohnadell quickly adapted to the new suspension and started to find his timing and line. It was quickly evident that he was getting comfortable and getting more confident. We were able to quickly adjust the P.C.2 way coilovers to his liking and get the car dialed in by end of practice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6340″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Atlanta was hot, in the 90’s with no breeze and mild humidity. Both driver’s showed good consistency and line during practice, so it was a tough call. Gushi kept a shallow angle on the entry keeping Alec out and it was enough to give the advantage to Ken.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”6346″ border_color=”grey” img_link_large=”yes” img_link_target=”_blank” img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]On his lead run, Alec drove his hardest but a failed supercharger belt ended his run before the last 2 turns. There was a small fire, caused by the unburned fuel, which gave everyone a scare. But no damage was done luckily.

He wanted something faster and more dangerous and progressed into motocross at the age of 6. Alec competed at a high level for 9 yrs and found a new love in watercross racing (high-speed stand-up jetski). He quickly moved up the ranks and became the first person under 18 to earn a professional license![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6250″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Alec quickly progressed and went onto win 7 National Championships and eventually became the youngest World Champion in the history of the sport at age 14![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6251″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]He fell in love with drifting at the age of 16, when he first started to drive, and built a S14 to compete at Pro Am events. His natural talent and experience helped him excel, earning a podium finish at each round. Alec won the Streetwise Drift Pro Am series earning him a Formula D Pro 1 license as a 17 yr old senior in high school![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6252″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Alec teamed up with Get Nuts Lab in late 2014 and under the advice of the veteran, Forrest Wang, they quickly went to work on his car to make it more reliable. Key changes were switching from a turbo setup to a Magnuson Supercharger setup, the addition of a WiseFab kit and STANCE Suspension Pro Comp2 coilovers.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6254″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]With a more reliable power setup (830 whp & 890 ft/lbs) and improved suspension, Alec was able to qualify 6th at Formula Drift Rd.1 at Long beach. Stance Suspension and Forrest have been working together for almost 6-yrs now. It is no fluke. Stance Suspension has been quietly creating champions in Japan as well, with Naoki Nakamura winning the D1SL Championship and Miki Yabuchi winning the D1SL Ladies League Championship in 2014![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6131″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]Forrest Wang, motivated more than ever, wanted a new chassis that would be even better, but not too different than the S14 as he had seen others switch in the past with bad results. The choice of an S15 came as no surprise and offered a chance at a similar formula with potential for greater performance.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6171″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]The new chassis proved to be the right choice! More power, lighter weight, better balance and new improved damper technology came together and surprised even Forrest himself! “This car is crazy! So much traction and response!” But with 6 months to build the car and almost no seat time, it was still going to be difficult with the incredible depth of the Formula D line up.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6173″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]As he started to practice and got the nerves under control, he quickly got comfortable….maybe too comfortable! He started to get inside and closer than ever to fellow drivers with ease.
Long Beach is not the most forgiving track either. One false calculation and you’re in the wall, and all of your hard work can be destroyed in seconds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image border_color=”grey” img_link_target=”_blank” image=”6174″ img_size=”large” img_link_large=”yes”][vc_column_text]This didn’t stop Forrest from getting inches away from the walls!
David, our head engineer, was there to make sure Forrest got comfortable and confident with the new chassis. He scored a perfect 97pts for #1 qualifying run. Arguably the best run ever at Long Beach! The amount of angle, speed, smoke and style was unreal. The run was incredible to watch live and had everyone standing up out of their seats![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”6187″ border_color=”grey” img_link_large=”yes” img_link_target=”_blank” img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]With the 1st place qualifying run, Forrest was matched up against a young up and coming driver Matt Coffman. Maybe it was the nerves, but Forrest didn’t put his best run in and the score was close. Judges favored the underdog and Matt won the tandem.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”6189″ border_color=”grey” img_link_large=”yes” img_link_target=”_blank” img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Building a brand new chassis in 6 months from scratch is no easy task, let alone qualifying 1st! We knew there were going to be more things that could improve and know that with every round we will be better and things will get nuttier!
